SGA article

we were under a crunch:

The Student Government Association convened at its usual time Monday, Nov. 8, under the observation of Edinboro University President Jeremy Brown, who wanted to see how the organization that governs student body activity conducts business.

"We always look forward to working with SGA," he said after officers made their reports.

Brown was there not only to observe but to stress the importance of "campus pride" and students "getting involved on campus."

As Brown looked on, SGA passed a resolution based on the findings of Vice President Christopher Bost after the annual safety walk, which was covered in last week's issue of the Spectator.

The resolution, which called upon the administration to act upon the results of the safety walk, was passed unanimously. Brown also touched base on those concerns, which highlighted areas such as the dark roadway outside Reeder Hall.

The results of the smoking survey were addressed by SGA President Jamie Lutz. She reported that 303 respondents supported smoking on campus whereas 105 did not.

Edinboro lost its bid to host a statewide conference from Jan. 29-31. The conference will instead be held at Kutztown University. Edinboro will be sending students to it when the time comes.

Also discussed were preparations for the annual "Big Event," which will be held on April 17, 2010.

The SGA also drew in its ideas for its philanthropy efforts. Ideas expanded upon included "Operation Warm," which involves students donating money to make coats from recycled materials.

"We'd get to help a lot of people," Lutz said.

Congress also discussed a possible collaboration with the community outreach center.

Bost is in the process of potentially bringing in coin machines and placing them in areas such as the convenience store and Rose Hall.

Thanksgiving break bus tickets for Philadelphia, as Public Relations Director Willie West stated, are still generating low sales. This new initiative needs to bring in enough sales by Nov. 20 or it will be canceled.

Funds were allotted to the Psychology Club and History Club, and a loan was approved to International Student Affairs at the meeting.
