Homecoming candidates presented

Homecoming 2008 got off to an exciting start Sept. 15 at Louis C. Cole Auditorium as the candidates for king and queen were presented to the public in grand form.

Both Greek and non-Greek organizations got in on the fun.

Kathleen Golden, master of ceremonies announced the “wonderful 23 candidates” using the speeches they had written. The candidates then chose to express themselves in a variety of ways as they strutted across the stage with their respective partners.

Joe Bockmore was the first to be presented with his escort, Tracy Tuccinard, to the ominous sounds of “Iron Man.” The sound soon turned to the New Kids On the Block as Ashley Baker, the choice of Alpha Sigma Tau, entered.

David Carlton, a graphic design major and representative brother of Phi Mu Alpha, came next with escort Erin Clark.

Rachele Barczyk was the candidate for Alpha Sigma Alpha, and made her grand entrance with Christopher “Big C” Curry. She received a standing ovation as the “loyal and dedicated” sister took her seat among the other candidates on the stage.

Andrew DeVenney, a brother of Lambda Chi Alpha, was then escorted by his sister, Rachel DeVenney.

Before Rosanna Cochran of A.F.R.I.C.A. made her way onto the stage with her escort Gilmore Cummings, petals were scattered at her feet, and two dancers appeared, gyrating to the sound of a frantic drumbeat.

This may have been a tough act to follow, but history major Brandon Fahey accomplished it. On the arm of Sara Ishman, he stood proud for the brothers of Tau Kappa Epsilon.

Jennifer Coutsis was then presented as the candidate of Alpha Psi Omega. Coutsis, who was escorted by Domenic DelGreco, has participated in 10 shows on campus including eight as actress, three as choreographer and one as director.

The theater theme continued with the appearance of Robert “Ippy” Ippolito, who was escorted by Sara Palajsa. He represents Alpha Psi Omega, the national theater honors fraternity.

Business major Lauren King, with her Phi Mu Alpha escort Jim Yeomans, came next. She took the opportunity to “wish all the seniors the best of luck in everything they do.”

Kappa Delta Rho then presented their vice president, Robert Jackson, with Annakaye Gier as his escort.

Delta Zeta sister Alysse Koleman, along with Joe Kelly, followed. In addition to being the vice president of Delta Zeta, Koleman has been serving in the Pennsylvania National Guard and has been a medic overseas in Iraq.

Devin Kagle represented Phi Kappa Psi.

“Whoa, Wait. What’s that? A bird, a plane …no! It’s…an angel?” said Golden as Kagle made his debut.

Savannah Martin kept it in the family by having her brother Noah escort her. She has been involved with Sigma Sigma Sigma, Order of Omega and Rho Lampda.

Eric Luke, the next candidate to be presented, was the selection of Alpha Phi Omega. He was escorted by Christina Sleptzoff. He will graduate with a degree in secondary education social studies.

Reina McCloy then took the stage arm-in-arm with a sweetheart of the Alpha Gamma Delta, Matthew Rugger.

Donnie Morris, also known as “Penny,” went next. A “nice guy” that is on the diversity funding board and a mentor for the Frederick Douglass floor in Lawrence Towers, Morris also works at the Multicultural Office. He was escorted by Soraya Zulakia.

The “crushin’ Russian” Julia Nekrasova and escort Seamus Baker followed. A representative of Phi Sigma Pi, Nekrasova is also a member of the math club and a “sexy superhero.”

After Nekrasova, Sean Moyak entered with his mother, Lisa Moyak. He appeared in the proper Greek attire: a toga. Moyak is “a proud member of Alpha Kappa Lambda.”

Sue Scott, a member of “Edinboro class two-thousand-never,” represented Sigma Alpha Iota and was escorted by Armond Walker.

Eric Porth, the next candidate, jumped the stage in a kilt. He represented the Theta Chi fraternity, but is also in the Air Force and will be deployed to Qatar in March. He was escorted by Starr Stroia.

Gina Volpini and her father next took the stage. Volpini is the candidate for Zeta Tau Alpha and a senior majoring in media and communications studies.

Lastly, Adam Prenatt, the president of the Theta Xi Fraternity, was presented. At the mention of his favorite football team, the Cowboys, the crowd broke from its cheerful mood to allow a few boos.

When asked about the event afterwards, Sigma Sigma Sigma member Amanda Petrush summed up the evening’s main feel.

“I think it went well. The diversity between the groups was awesome and (so was) having non-Greeks joining in,” she said.

Students can vote for their favorite candidate at the computers set up on the first floor of the Pogue Student Center until Oct 1. The polls are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
